NYC Time Traveler

Red-Tailed Hawks@Washington Square

This is the second year red-tailed hawks have nested on NYU's Bobst Library, overlooking Washing Square Park in Greenwich Village...but late May (I was leading a group through the park) marked the first time I actually spotted one soaring, searching for food for the season's two fledglings. (They're known as eyases, in the hawk world.) And then, in June, we spotted both young birds sitting together in a tree, as they began to explore their world outside the nest.

Previously, I'd been following their lives via live webcam, and though the 2012 season is over, you can review the story via video reruns and photos at the website

...or just come on out to the park to see if you can spot this year's "kids," Boo and Scout!
